Handframed stocking, c1850

Made in natural wool, these would be worn with breeches by men.   Although most stitches were produced mechanically by the stocking frame, the narrowing at the calf and ankle was done by  hand.  As it was very hard work, men usually operated the frame, using both feet to move the treadles and both arms to shift the heavy iron carriage.  Once the stocking was finished it was removed from the frame and sewn up by hand.
