Miner's Lamp

Ayrshire pits were seen as being safe to work with unprotected naked flames. This lamp was filled with animal fat (tallow) and a wick went through the spout. The miners hooked it onto the front of their hardened caps. This one was used at the Auchenharvie pits, Stevenston. The lamp is inscribed "HAL Irvine".
