National Registration Identity Card for Margaret S Buchanan, 26 Loudoun Street, Mauchline

National Identity Card for Margaret Buchanan. ID cards were introduced during the War in the National Registration Act 1939. Everyone, includig children, had to carry one at all times to show who they were and where they lived. This was so that if a household were separated during a bombing or other attack, they could be identified, and if possible, reunited. It was mandatory to carry an ID card until 1952 - seven years after the end of WWII.
