Copper Buckle
This little copper buckle, found at Rowallan Castle in Ayrshire during recent arcaeological excavations carries four scallop motifs. Scallops were first worn during the medieval period by pilgrims and crusaders who collected them from the shores of the Holy Land. They were later adopted as symbols of piety and later still simply as decoration.
