Pipe (kiseru)
This bamboo kiseru (pipe) features a design of gilt and
copper bamboo leaves on the silver end pieces.
Tobacco was introduced to Japan by Portuguese traders in the
second half of the sixteenth century. It quickly became
popular. Tobacco boxes, pouches and pipes were fashionable
accessories and commonly appeared in ukiyo-e prints of the
Edo period (1600-1868).
