Cinquedea 4
This cinequedea is composed of a strong curved crossguard and
tang which is faced with ivory plates. These plates are inlaid with
three metal ornaments that are decrated with foliage designs,
trefoils and quatrefoils. Both trefoils and quatrefoils are
Christian symbols: the trefoil represents the Holy Trinity of the
Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the quatrefoil, the first four gospels
of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The edge of the cinquedea's hilt
is inscribed with simplistic geometric designs. The unadorned blade
is impressed with a maker's mark at its base.
