Lantern Projector

By the end of the 19th century, magic lanterns like these were everywhere, in homes, churches, schools and theatres. They came in all shapes and sizes, from small ones for children, to large mahogany and brass ones such as these. Most of these large ones were lit by limelight which was created by squirting, oxygen and hydrogen onto a piece of limestone which turned incandescent once the gases were lit, notice the chimney on top.
