Cinema

Standing within the long tradition of theatre, the cinema has drawn in audiences from across the cultural landscape since the late 19th century when the first moving images were screened to the public. During the first decades of motion pictures, the demand for movies, the amount of new productions, and the average runtime of movies, all kept increasing meaning more and more cinemas popped up in towns and cities everywhere.

Multi-screen cinemas eventually arrived in the late 1950s. Since the 1960s, multiple-screen theaters became the norm, and many existing venues were retrofitted so that they had multiple auditoriums.

Nowadays, with the advent of online streaming services, many people prefer to watch films at home. However, the magic of the cinema still remains, and many special features such as 3D and IMAX are not able to be recreated at home.
