Robert Hannah was born in Creetwon, Kirkcudbrightshire. His historical and genre subjects were similar to those of the John and Thomas Faed, who may have been an influence on his work. Little is known of the artist, athough he clearly painted to a high standard, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, London on at least one occasion, and in Liverpool and Rome.
