Scottish Landscape
This view looks down from the hills in central
Scotland where the Highlands meet the Lowlands. Stirling
Castle is just visible a little below the horizon
line.
Samuel Bough was born in Carlisle and was a self taught
artist. He worked in Manchester as a scene painter and
travelled extensively in Europe but he settled in Scotland.
Towards the end of his career he focused mainly on coastal and
seafaring scenes but his reputation was made,
inititally, on his topographical paintings which he
worked on out in the open air.
