Resting Calves
David Gauld painted these Ayrshire calves in the latter part of
his career. Cattle were the subject of much of his work of this
period and it was with these works that his reputation was really
established. They had a strong commercial appeal and it seems that
he eventually slip into working to a formula.
Gauld was keenly interested in the decorative effects in
painting and this drew him to the Kirkcudbright school. As well as
a painter, he was also a stained glass designer and as such his
most significant commission was for a church in Buenos Aires.
