Hideo Furuta was born in 1949 in Hiroshima, Japan and studied Art at Tokyo Visual Arts College from 1969-71. He spent five years between 1971 and 76 studying Art, Mathematics and Physics and then from 1978 –80 attended the European Art History at the Department of Comparative Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics at the University of Hiroshima.
Following these studies he worked as a stonemason at the Ishizaki Quarry, Kurahashi Island, learning from master-craftsmen. Furuta came initially to Wales in 1985 and then to Creetown in Dumfries & Galloway 1991 where he is still based. His granite sculpture has been commissioned and exhibited widely in the UK and from 1992-94 he was the Henry Moore Fellow in Sculpture at the University of Northumbria.
He lives and works near Creetown, in Dumfries and Galloway.
