Three Cones

Internationally renowned as a sculptor, Andy travels all over the world to undertake commissions and lectures but the landscape near his home in Dumfriesshire remains at the heart of his work.   Wherever he is, Andy uses what he finds around him, working with the materials such as ice, snow, leaves, twigs, stone and wood in their natural environment. Because much of his sculptural work is temporary, he records his creations in fine colour photographs, many of which have accompanying text that forms an integral part of the work.   Born in Cheshire in 1956, Andy grew up near Leeds and developed an interest in the countryside at an early age. In 1974 he gained a place at the Bradford College of art on the foundation course and the following year he was accepted on a BA (Hons) course in Fine Art at Preston Polytechnic, Lancashire Annex, Lancashire. He moved to Penpont, Dumfriesshire in August 1986 and in January 1987, in sub zero temperatures, he made his first major series of ice sculptures.   The first book ‘Andy Goldsworthy’ was published in June 1990 and has been followed by five other major publications following the development of his work.
