The Courtyard, Venice

Born in Glasgow, D Y Cameron studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Royal Scottish Academy. He was interested in painting architecture and landscape and was influenced by the work of fellow Scottish painter, Muirhead Bone and later by James McNeil Whistler. From early etchings and sketches Cameron also worked in oil and watercolour depicting the mountains of Scotland in an economical and uncluttered manner, which to a certain degree, reflected his personality.   He was a quiet and retiring man, the son of a clergyman, with a keen interest in the church himself particularly church music and ceremony. He was not interested in the decorative possibilities of painting and though he knew most of the Glasgow Boys and exhibited in many exhibitions with them his work does stand slightly outside the mainstream of the Glasgow School. He was the King’s Painter and Limner in Scotland and lived for many years at Kippen in Stirlingshire (1933-45). He died in Perth aged 80.
