Galloway Winter
John was born in Kirkcudbright and with encouragement from Jessie M King and EA Taylor, studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1949-53, and then in France and Italy on an RSA Travelling Scholarship. He is particularly interested in landscapes, which often include figures and has been commissioned to undertake portraits, in particular the Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, James Holloway.
He has exhibited at the RSA and RGI and staged a major retrospective of his work at Gracefield in 2003. His other fascination is the technique of trompe l’oeil and he has undertaken mural panels at Prestwick Airport, Scottish & Newcastle Breweries and for National Trust for Scotland at Culzean Castle. He is now based in Ayrshire.
