The khanda is one of the oldest types of Indian sword. It was extremely popular in Orissa and Central India and a favourite weapon of Rajputs. Khandas tend to have a broad, straight blade that widens towards a blunt point. However, this example possesses a European blade with inscribed Latin script that has been added at a later date. The hilt is characteristic of those found on khandas, with a round, flat pommel surmounted by a large spike.
