This sword dates from the late 16th century and has origins in Germany, when it was a kingdom within the Holy Roman Empire. The hilt of the sword has an urn-shaped pommel with nut, unadorned grip with fingerloops to the front and rear of its downturned crossguard. The metalwork of the hilt is decorated with a foliate design and features Classical figures where the crossguard trerminates and on the front fingerloop. The blade is fullered to both lighten and strengthen the sword. It is inscribed with markings on both sides of the blade.
