An Account of the Burning of the Articles of the Union at Dumfries

On 20th November 1706, a band of 300 armed men rode into Dumfries, built a bonfire beside the Midsteeple which was then under construction and ceremonially burnt the Articles of Union.  They then fixed this broadsheet explaining their reasons to the Market Cross and disappeared into the night.  The Scottish parliament feared a serious uprising and all efforts were made to trace the printer.   The protesters were Cameronians, supporters of the covenanter Richard Cameron, but they were not caught and no further incidents occurred.
