Troqueer Volunteer Prize Medal, 1805

This Honorary medal was given by Mrs Maxwell of Kirkconnell to the second marksman of the Troqueer Volunteers on 22 July 1805. It has an elaborate military motif on one side and the Maxwell coat of arms and a simple inscription on the other. The Volunteers were the precursors of the local militia raised by the government to defend Britain from attack during the Napoleonic wars from 1808 to 1815.
