Stone axe roughout, Dunragit
No. 2 Holdings, Dunragit
A complete roughout for a stone axe. It has a narrow
rounded butt, a broad blade and oval cross-section. It has
been worked to shape on both faces.
This axe roughout was manufactured in Cumbria, probably at one
of the Neolithic axe workshops in the Langdale area.
Roughouts were normally ground and polished close to the quarry
workshops and it is unusual to find a roughout like this in the far
west of Dumfries and Galloway. It may be significant that it
was discovered within the large ceremonial timber enclosure at
Dunragit. See Dunragit aerial image.
