Dunragit Henge and Mote
Excavation by Manchester Unviversity in the early 2000s showing
the two arcs of large post-holes at the far side of the
trench.
In the background, visible against the trees, is the mound of
Dunragit Mote. Excavation here showed that it was not a medieval
motte, as long thought, but had in fact been built in the
Neolithic, at a time contemporary with the large henge. An avenue
of timbers, visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, can be seen
leading from the henge in the direction of the mound, indicating
that the two sites were linked.
