Norse Sword
The sword was found with a copper alloy pin and glass perforated
bead, when the churchyard in Kirkcudbright was extended.
These are the typical grave goods of a pagan Norse burial, probably
dating to the ninth or tenth century. No grave or indication
of a skeleton was found. It seems likely that this was a
pagan burial adjacent to the minster church of St. Cuthbert
established in the 8th century.
Incomplete Norse sword, heavily corroded.
