Margaret Carlyle Aitken, niece to Thomas Carlyle
Margaret was the daughter of Jean and James Aitlen. Jean was sister to Thomas Carlyle, and her husband James was a painter. The family lived with Dr John Carlyle, brother to Thomas, at The Hill, St Mary's Street, Dumfries.
Shortly before her death in 1932 Margaret presented pver 700 autograph letters by her uncle, Thomas Carlyle, to the National Library of Scotland.
