Peden the Prophet's Staff

Peden's staff was loaned to the museum collection early in the 20th century by a desendant of a Mr McClure who owned the staff in 1826. The label attached to the staff states that when Peden was preaching in Wigtownshire he would visit the house of a man named Mr. McClure of Challoch. It is possible that this Mr McClure of Challoch acquired the staff after his Convenanter friend passed away and that it remained with his family until it was loaned to the museum. The label on the staff states that it was at one stage 18 inches longer than it is now.
