St. Mary's Hospital
After Alexander Fleming inherited money from his Uncle, he was
able to afford the fees to enter into medical school and leave his
job in a shipping office. He was admitted into St. Mary's Medical
School in 1901 and studies chemistry, physics and biology in the
first two years, followed by physiology, histology, pharmacology
and anatomy. He gained his MBBS in 1906.
Fleming spent much of his professional life working in St.
Mary's, first as assistant bacteriologist for Sir Almroth Wright,
then as a lecturer, and after WWI, as Professor of
Bacteriology.
