Modern fermentation vat for producing penicillin
In 1959, Beecham's scientists discoverd the penicillin nucleus
which allowed them to synthesise semisynthetic penicillins for
treating people. This photograph shows a fermentation vat used for
the commercial production of penicllin. Tank reactors such as
these vats have a capacity for 135 to
450 thousand litres of culture, and can produce 40-50
grams of penicillin per litre of this culture.
