Letter from James, Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Margaret of Dumfermline.

This notarial letter of dispentation and legitimation granted by James, Abbot of the Monastery of Saint Margaret of Dumfermline, in virtue of apostolic letters by Pope Julius II, approves the marriage between Alexander Boyd of Kilmarnock and Janet Colville of Ochiltree.   Alexander Boyd was the younger son of the outlawed Robert Boyd and the brother of the exiled former Earl of Arran.  Although their lands had been seized by the crown for treason, the Alexander and the remaining Boyd family continued to live at Kilmarnock where they maintained the castle for the crown and payed rent as tenants.
