Dean Castle Keep

This glass plate slide shows Dean Castle after careful restoration work, commissioned by the 8th Lord Howard de Walden, had been completed on the two main buildings but before the gatehouse was built.  The two carved panels that you can see high up on the side elevation of the Palace building (the smaller of the two) are the coats of arms of Thomas Boyd, the 1st Earl of Arran, and that of his wife, Princess Mary Stewart, the sister of James III.  These armorial panels can still be seen today but the erosion of the sandstone is such that it is difficult to pick out any details.
