Dumfries Burns Howff Club, Burns Bi- Centenary Year

A monochrome photographic print of the committee of a local Burns Club formed to organise celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth.   Dumfries Burns Howff Club was formed in 1889. It is distinguished by the fact  that it meets in a building having strong associations with Robert Burns, his "howff" or preferred local inn, The Globe Inn, Dumfries. "..the Globe Tavern here, which for these many years has been my howff.." was how Burns described it to his publisher, George Thomson.   By the end of the 19th century Dumfries had six Burns Clubs, with Dumfries Burns Club, formed in 1820, being the most senior. This club was rather select, its membership drawn from the professional classes of the town. The other clubs were perhaps more down to earth.   In 1889 the Dumfries Burns Howff Club was formed with the purpose of organising a Burns Night dinner in the Globe Inn in order to mark its unique connection with the poet. The club celebrated its centenary in 1989 and is still active within the Burns movement today.
