Park Street and Gas Brae, Kilmarnock

This is one of several paintings by Law of scenes around Kilmarnock.  There used to be a gasometer on Park Street and so the place has also come to be known as Gas Brae.  Law apparantly raised some suspicion whilst sketching there one day during the second world war.  Gasworks were an obvious target during the war and the sight of someone taking down details of one was enough to raise questions as to who they might be passing the information onto. The tall building in the background was the observatory of Thomas Morton.
