"The Siller Gun" by John Mayne
The "Siller Gun" by John Mayne is a poem about the annual
shooting competition of the Seven Trades of Dumfries. First written
in 1777, it proved so popular that Mayne twice wrote extra verses
for it. Simply written in lowland Scots, its gentle humourous
verses paint a lively picture of what life was like in Dumfries in
the 18th century. The tombstones of many of its principal
characters may be seen in St Michaels Churchyard, Dumfries.
