Velocipede or Boneshaker
This machine is thought to have been made by Robert Hannah, carpenter in Newton Stewart. The Boneshaker originated in Paris and was popular in this country between 1868-70. The average machine could reach a speed of around 8 miles (13km) per hour. Mounting the Boneshaker involved running alongside and vaulting into the saddle. The curved leg-rests which project over the front wheel are used when coasting downhill.
