Flying shuttles

Weaving is the threading of weft threads carried on shuttles through a series of parallel warp threads.  Early shuttles were simply sticks with wool wound around them.  During the 1700s improvements in loom and shuttle design led to the use of the wheeled flying shuttle.  This could be transferred rapidly from one side of the loom to the other by a single weaver.  The thread was carried on a bobbin partly enclosed within the shuttle.
