Section of Rail from the Kilmarnock to Troon Railway

Sectionof the original rail from the first true railway in Scotland.  The Kilmarnock to Troon railway opened in 1811 and first used a steam locomotive in 1817.   Produced at the Kilmarnock Foundry, this type of rail was designed to allow the wagon wheels to run on the horizontal part of the 'L' shape.  The vertical wall kept the wheels on the rail.   This piece was cut from a rail found in 1995.
