Pottery Production
Pottery production in Scotland was minimal until around the
middle of the eighteenth century. By the nineteenth century it was
one of Scotland's most successful exports. The main centers of
production were Glasgow and East Lothian. These were thriving
centers because of the clay resources and export potential there.
Within south-west Scotland, there were famous potteries at Cumnock,
Drongan, Sanquhar and Kilmarnock whose names included J. & M.
Craig, J. & R. Howie and Southhook Potteries. Cumnock Pottery
was probably the best loved for it's mottoes, and therefore became
the most popular export of all.
