The Meadowfoot Smelter with piles of lead ‘pigs’

In 1910 The Wanlockhead Lead Mining Company, which had taken the lease of the mining grounds four years previously, thoroughly overhauled the smelt Mill at Meadowfoot and the capacity increased to two roasting furnaces, five Scotch Ore Hearths and one slag hearth. The desilvering and refining plants were scrapped and from that time the silver lead was sent to refiners. Final closure of the Mill came with the Depression of the 1930s. the hearths and blowing apparatus were torn out for scrap and the work on demolition advanced during W.W.2 when the building was used as an artillery target.
