Sample of Graphite

Graphite is another form of coal modified by high temperature, which was mined in Ayrshire. It is a form of pure carbon with unusual properties.    It is composed of plate-like crystals which can slide over each other. It therefore acts like a lubricant. It was used for this purpose on the curtain lace manufacturing looms of the Irvine Valley in Ayrshire. It was used in preference to oil because it did not contaminate the cotton fabric being produced.
