Miner's safety lamp

This miner's lamp was used in local pits to detect the presence of gas.  The light either went out or changed colour if gas was present.  It was capable of detecting only 2% of methane.  Later safety lamps were based on the same principle as the "Davy" lamp.  They were the only lighting underground until electricity was installed in early years of the 20th century.
