The region is not unique in its history of clock and watch manufacture - everyone needs accurate and reliable time-pieces - but the quality and renown of many of these highly-skilled craftsmen means that their work is still sought after. Cameron's of Kilmarnock, 'Clockie' Brown of Mauchline (mentioned in the work of Robert Burns), and the Breckenridge family (suppliers of many church clocks) were all important players.
