Kirk-Maiden, Monreith

The grave being dug was for Andrew McCulloch, who died in 1865. Before the end of the century ruined Kirkmaiden church was much changed for the chancel (right-hand part) was re-roofed and converted into a burial vault for the Maxwells of Monreith. The church and its surroundings are the setting for two well known local legends, one of the saintly Medana and the other of the rash young McCulloch of Myrton.. In the churchyard lies a French naval officer, Commander Francois Thurot, killed in a naval engagement off Luce Bay in 1760.
