View of Strathaven Castle
An earlier Strathaven Castle, also known as Avondale Castle, is
thought to have been built in the 14th century by the Baird family.
The lands where the present castle now stands was granted to Sir
Andrew Stewart, Lord Avondale, who either incorporated the earlier
building or rebuilt the castle during the 15th century.
