Dunure Castle

Dunure Castle sits on the west coast of Scotland about 5 miles from Ayr and looks over Ayr Bay. The castle was the seat of the Kennedys of Carrick who had owned the land since 1357. In August 1563, Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the castle for a few days, the guest of the 4th Earl of Cassillis, Gilbert Kennedy.   Dunure Castle has been ruined since the mid-17th century. it is not certain how the castle came to ruin, however, anecdote and local tradition states that the castle was burnt or blown up.
