Back view of Newark Castle, Port Glasgow
Newark Castle was built for the George Maxwell who held the
Baronetcy of Finlaystone in the 15th century. The castle was
enlarged in the 16th century by his descendant Patrick Maxwell, who
was notorious for his cruel behaviour of murdering two of his
neighbours and beating his wife.
