Abbotsford, the home of Sir Walter Scott, near Melrose
After Sir Walter Scott's lease lapsed on
Ashiesteil, he purchased Cartleyhole estate. Cartleyhole was
soon renamed Abbotsford, after a nearby ford used by the monks of
Melrose Abbey, and the original farmhouse was enlarged and
renovated greatly in three stages between 1811 and 1824. Abbotsford
is now a tourist attraction.
