Postcard of Tam O'Shanter & Souter Johnnie

The hero of Robert Burns' poem 'Tam O'Shanter' was depicted as wearing a round, flat crowned woollen bonnet.  This soon became known as the 'Tam O'Shanter' although today the term more frequently refers to a beret.
