Hone stone is present in a number of places in Ayrshire but was only successfully worked near Stair. It was first quarried and then mined.   It is a form of shale which has been modified by heat. It has a very fine texture which makes it a hight quality abrasive. It was exported all over the world, being used as a stone for sharpening fine edged blades.
