Miner's Turtle Shell Hard Hat

This helmet is made of compressed fibre, in order to give it a combination of strength and lightness. In the dangerous environment of the mine protective equipment was important.   In the days before the application of stringent safety rules, miners often wore soft caps which were preferable because they were more comfortable although offering no protection.
