Their daughter, Henrietta, married the Marquis of Titchfield
(later 4th Duke of Portland), who was responsible for
building Scotland's first railway which ran between Kilmarnock and
Troon in 1795. The terms of Henrietta's marriage contract
stipulated that her property could only be inherited by her direct
descendants, so the Kilmarnock Estate passed to her son the 5th
Duke of Portland, but when he died without any children in 1879,
only his Portland Estates were be passed on to his
cousin.
The Scott inheritance was passed to Henrietta's daughters. One
of these, Lucy, had married the 6th Lord Howard de
Walden in 1828. When Lucy died in 1899 it was her grandson who
became Henrietta Scott's most direct descendant, and inherited the
Kilmarnock Estate and Dean Castle. To mark this he added the name
Scott to his own, becoming Thomas Evelyn Scott- Ellis, the 8th Lord
Howard de Walden.
Lord Howard de Walden was responsible for restoring the ruined
Dean Castle which had lain neglected for two centuries. The Keep
was completed before the onset of World War 1 and the Palace by the
mid-1930s. The restoration was concluded in 1935 with the
completion of the gatehouse which, although a completely new
structure, was sympathetic to the original architecture and period.
The couple spent a lot of time at their Scottish retreat and chose
to be buried there.
Thomas Evelyn Scott Ellis died in 1946 and was succeeded by
his son, John Osmael Scott Ellis as the 9th Baron Howard de Walden
and Seaford. The 9th Lord spent most of his youth at the Dean and
from that time onwards he took a great interest in Kilmarnock. In
1974 he gifted Dean Castle and its contents (including most of his
father's internationally acclaimed collections of armour, weapons,
tapestries and musical instruments) to Kilmarnock & Loudoun
District Council together with 40 acres of ground.
