Fans

  Folding fans were invented in Japan between the sixth and eighth century and spread, via China and Korea, to become popular around the world.  They usually have calligraphy or designs painted on them. These sensu (paper folding-fans) are painted with natural imagery.   Folding fans continue to be used to keep cool in summer or when wearing formal costume, and by geisha when dancing.  They are also exchanged as engagement gifts or given to friends because they are a symbol of friendship, respect and future happiness.
