These pictures of troops landing at Leith Docks in November 1943 include a local soldier Private John McKinnel.   In May 1940 the 51st Highland Division fought on in France after the main part of the British Expeditionary Force had been evacuated from Dunkirk. They fought at St Valéry-en-Caux until completely surrounded, and out of ammunition and supplies. They were ordered to surrender on 12 June 1940. Some 10,000 were taken prisoner.   John McKinnel was captured at St Valery in June 1940, taken to Germany and imprisoned in Stalag 8B, He was finally repatriated via Sweden in 1943.
